Tours and Sightseeing

There will be two post conference tours:

View from Oravivuori

Tour 1 is leaving onSaturday  6th July at 7:30 a.m. from Helsinki  Marina Congress Centre  toward Jyväskylä. The first destination is Oravivuori, one of the Struve Geodetic Arc points. In the afternoon there is a presentation of Fredikson Map Collection. The busses will leave back to Helsinki at 16:00. Please book your hotel for the night in Helsinki. We will be in Helsinki about 20:00. One bus will continue to Tour 2.

The Tour 1 is sponsored by the National Land Survey of Finland. The participation is limited to maximum of 90 people (select the Tour 1 in the registration form). Please note that the visit to Oravivuori requires good walking shoes. The hill is about 100 m high from the harbour and the path is occasionally rather steep.

Tour 2 continues after Tour 1 from Jyväskylä to Savonlinna and Lappeenranta. It includes two night accomondation at a family farm LomaMokkila in an idyllic location. During the visit we have an opportunity to see typical Finnish countryside and the unique lake region, enjoy famous views from Punkaharju and visit the Savonlinna Opera Festival organized in the medieval Olavinlinna Castle. We will also visit Lappeenranta, located on the shore of the lake Saimaa about 30 km from the Russian border.  There we will see the Aarno Piltz map collection concentrating mostly on the old maps of Carelia. On the way, we will stop by the Salpa line, a bunker line built after the Winter war in 1940.  The Bus will be back in Helsinki on Monday 8th late afternoon. We will stop at the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport at 16:00 and then continue to the city (about 16:30). Please book your hotel in Helsinki for the night if you are not leaving immediately. Our tour guide will be Leena Miekkavaara who is well familiar with the area.
